What Does Your Sperm Test Actually Mean?

If your partner has been trying to conceive without success, a semen analysis is usually the first test recommended for the male partner. It is quick, non-invasive and gives a clear picture of sperm health.

But most men who receive their results have no idea what the numbers mean — or what to do next.

That is exactly what Dr. Shefketova’s team is here for.

What is a semen analysis?

A semen analysis examines both the semen and the sperm within it. A specialist embryologist or biologist assesses:

— Volume, pH, colour and viscosity of the sample
— Sperm concentration — how many sperm are present
— Motility — how many sperm are moving and how well
— Morphology — the shape and structure of the sperm

Every result is compared against World Health Organization reference standards to determine whether values fall within the normal range.

When is this test needed?

The most common reason is simple — pregnancy has not happened after twelve months of regular, unprotected sex.

It is also used to:
— Identify a possible male factor contributing to infertility
— Check recovery after varicocele treatment or vasectomy
— Assess suitability for sperm donation
— Monitor changes after lifestyle or medical interventions

Why results can vary

Sperm production is sensitive to what is happening in the body. Illness, stress, alcohol, antibiotics, heat and other environmental factors can all affect results temporarily.

This is why a single abnormal result does not mean permanent infertility. A second analysis within four weeks of the first is usually recommended before any conclusions are drawn.

How to prepare

— Sexual abstinence for 3 to 5 days before the test
— Avoid alcohol, antibiotics or recreational substances in the days beforehand
— The sample is collected in a sterile container provided by the laboratory
— Clear preparation instructions are given at the time of booking

What happens after the test?

Your results are reviewed by Dr. Shefketova’s specialist team. If everything is within normal range, that is reassuring — and the investigation can focus elsewhere.

If results show abnormalities, further testing may be recommended — including sperm morphology analysis, DNA fragmentation, oxidative stress testing or microbiological culture — to identify the exact cause and the right treatment path.

You will not be left with a page of numbers and no explanation. Every result is discussed clearly, in plain language, with honest guidance on what it means for your fertility and your next steps.

The Emotional Side of Male Fertility Testing

For many men, a semen analysis feels uncomfortable — even threatening. There can be pressure, embarrassment or fear about what the results might show.

At Dr. Shefketova’s practice, male fertility is treated with the same seriousness and care as female fertility. You are not a number on a form. You are half of a couple trying to build a family — and that matters here.

Whatever the result shows, there is always a next step. And you will not face it alone.
